6 Ways To Market Effectively Using Google Trends
6 Ways To Market Effectively Using Google Trends

What is Google Trends?

The Google Trends homepage says, “Explore what the world is looking for.” This is a good way to describe what the tool does. Google Trends is a tool that shows the most popular topics, search terms, and news on Google. Current trends from the last seven days and 2004 are shown in real-time.

Where Do Google Trends Data Originate?

A tool called Google Trends comprises anonymous samples of search requests made to Google in real-time and not in real-time. Then, the topics are sorted into groups. Because we can notice trends by location, the data is normalized to ensure that the regions with the most search volume don’t always rank the best.

To make things easier to compare, Google divides each data point by how many people searched for that location and period in that area. This way, you can see how popular each data point is compared to other data points in the same area. According to how many people search for that topic, the numbers are scaled from 0 to 100. As one big caveat, Google keeps queries that may be caused by “unusual activity.”

Google says this is done to keep the search data quality that other Google tools give you up to par. People who use Trends could then use the tool to figure out which words are considered spam and change them accordingly if Google removed the spam from the tool. Besides search queries, the Realtime Search Trends report also shows how many articles are written on Google News every hour.

How to Create the Best Use of Google Trends

In Google Trends, there are many different ways to slice and dice the data. In Google Trends, there are four main parts:

  • Explore
  • Trending Searches
  • Year in Search
  • Subscriptions

You can find the information that fits your needs by location, date, categories, search section (News vs. Shopping), and search terms vs. search topics. Then, instead of going over each section and visualization, let’s look at how they can be used to do common marketing tasks.

Use Google Trends to learn about the market

It’s important to know how many people want your product or service to start in a new place. Google Trends Explore can help you figure out how your product or service changes with the seasons and where you are. Under your search, there is a drop-down menu called “country.” You can choose a metropolitan area or click on one of the options on the map to narrow your search. You can also change the date to make or break the history, but keep in mind that the sample will change if you choose a time that is less than seven days old.

Utilize Google Trends to Conduct Newsjacking

Do you use newsjacking to help you come up with content? Then, please subscribe to Google Trends feeds. Sign up to take the top, most, or all search trends every week, every day, or as soon as they happen.

Keywords research

Many keyword research tools show how many people search for those words each month. The only way to tell if searches for the subject are going up or down is if you’ve been keeping track of it month-to-month. Google Trends can help you determine how your search volume changes over time. While looking at the trends for your keywords, you can also look for related queries that are on the rise.

These queries should also be in your set of keywords. Make sure to use the topics that Google suggests in auto-complete when possible, and look at the “Related queries” filtered by Top queries if you don’t know what people might be looking for. When you find different words in the related queries, add five more to compare them.

Utilize to Facilitate Product Innovation

Do you want to know what colors, materials, or styles are popular for your product? Suppose that you start with a broad topic in Explore. It could show colors, materials, or other new popular products and show how much interest has grown over the chosen period. Those marked Breakouts show a big change from the previous period. They grew more than 5000 percent.

Utilize to Create Topic Clusters

The difference between search terms and topics should be clear now that you’ve looked at Trends. Google Trends can help you make your topic cluster strategy easier to understand when you use topics. A lot of the time, when you search for a term, Google will show you topics instead of just search terms. When one is chosen, it also shows “Related topics.”

Check out the real-time search trends report to get a sense of how Google News helps connect different topics. We can talk about even more than topics, though. Once you’ve chosen a term, you can then choose a group. These are meant to help you narrow down your search, but after choosing a Category, you can stop your search and only get queries and topics related to that high-level category.

Make Use of Google Trends to Look at News Publications

It sounds like you’re either pitching to or working in the news. You want to look at the Trending Searches data when you’re done with that. The real-time trending searches list how many Google News articles have been written about a trending topic each hour, just like I said. When choosing a topic, the bar charts show how many new articles were added that hour and how many had been added over time. See how the news might lead or follow the search trend.

According to Google, these are the best articles on Google News based on ranking. If you follow a certain topic, you can see which publications are doing well. If you are a publisher, you should focus on pitching those publications that regularly cover your topics. You should also check out your competitors to see if you can improve your structured data or Publisher Center information to match them. Ready to start? Check out Google Trends now, and see how you can use it for your own business.
