Generate Money While Being a Stay-at-Home Mother: Taking care of growing children at home is a full-time job in and of itself, but it’s frustrating that you don’t get paid for it. Here’s a smart way to make extra money while still spending time with your kids.

Take a look at your schedule.

Your hours as a stay-at-home parent are likely to be restricted. If your kids aren’t in school yet, you might be able to work outside the home before they wake up, nap, or go to sleep. Try to figure out how many hours a week you can spend on a job that pays you and still have time for yourself.

Consider your qualifications.

Think about a few things when looking for the right job to help home mothers make money while at home with their kids. For instance, are you sounding for a job that doesn’t require much training from you? Would you rather do something that helps you keep or improve the skills you used in your last job, making it easier to return to work if you decide to?

Think about some of the other things that might affect the type of gig you do, like whether you’ll have to travel or if you’ll need a lot of money to get the gig started. Use these things to help you decide what kind of job you want.

Decide whether you want your kids involved in your business.

One way to make money while staying home with your kids is to work during your “off” hours. Another way is to include them in your business ventures.

Depending on how old your child is, there are many side jobs they could help you with. For example, you could offer to babysit for other working parents in your area (play dates and a little extra cash sounds like a win-win), walk dogs in the neighborhood, or watch other people’s pets while their owners are away. Bringing your child to operate with you is a great way to teach them the value of hard work and money.

Prepare yourself.

Depending on your job, you may need to set up some systems to get the most out of it.

For example, if you want to work from home a few hours a week for a job in your field, it might help to have a separate office space. Maybe you’ll need some supplies, or maybe it would help to have a babysitter even for a few hours a week to really focus on your tasks and not just do them when the kids are sleeping.

Look for possibilities.

You can start looking for jobs once you know how much time you have and what kind of job you want. If you want to do something in your neighborhood, you could ask around or post your availability on sites like Nextdoor that cater to people in your area.

If you want to do something in the field you used to work in, talk to your old coworkers and bosses, or post on online forums for your field. Check out sites like FlexJobs and Fiverr that focus on part-time, hourly, or remote work for more opportunities. You can also make a good amount of money by doing things online like taking surveys.

Consider your options.

Once you start making money, make sure to treat it like any other money you make. That means setting aside a certain amount of money from each paycheck to pay taxes. How much you set aside will depend on where you live and how much money you make, and an accountant can help you figure that out. It would help if you also had a plan for what to do with the rest of your money.

Allow time for adjustment.

Remember that even a small task can seem like a big deal when you have to keep your kids healthy and happy all day. Making extra cash is nice, but it will probably add a little stress, especially at first. Give herself time to get used to the new schedule and plan for a learning curve.

Set a date to check-in

If you want to make money while staying at home with the kids to pay for something specific, like a trip or an unexpected bill, you might be able to stop working once you’ve reached your goal.

If you decided to make money to bring in some extra cash for the rest of your life, make sure to check in with yourself every so often to make sure things are still going well, and you’re happy.

Even if you tried to make some extra money and it didn’t work out right now, that doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t work if you tried it again later.
